Students trace the territorial expansion of the US to the Pacific, the creation of an empire (with acquisitions in the Pacific and Caribbean), and its participation in world events, including the Spanish American War and World War 1. By 1920, the US became, in some ways, the world's strongest country. This is the context in which students meet up with many dramatic events, from the Massacre at Little Big Horn to the sinking of the Maine and the sinking of the Lusitania.
