The topic begins with the impact of the Great Depression on the Soviet Union, central Europe, and the United States. In all three, strong leaders emerged, including dictators in central Europe and the Soviet Union.

  • the causes of World War 2 -- similar to the causes of World War 1 but greatly strengthened by the Great Depression and desire to overturn the Versailles Treaty in Germany
  • the phases of the World War 2, from successful expansion of Axis countries to their defeat by the Americans, British, and Soviets
  • the Holocaust as a "war within a war" between 1933 and 1945
